Client: Private Client.
Type: Residential extension.
Brief: This project, currently at detailed design stage, is to be a single storey rear extension to a large detached house in West Oxford, Oxfordshire. The existing property, grade II listed and dating from the 1600’s, is set over 3 floors with a large conservatory to the rear. While the existing house is beautifully presented, due to a deep plan, cellular rooms and small windows, it suffers at times from being too dark. For this reason, in addition to plans to make extensive internal alterations, our clients want to remove the existing conservatory and replace it with a proper orangery style extension that will serve as a large family room that can be used throughout the year. The extension is to be traditional in feel and must complement the existing property. Rather than simply butting the extension up to the rear wall of the existing house, a structural glass link is proposed, providing a visual and physical separation between old and new. Random rubble stone walls are proposed to face up the extension along with a flat leaded roof. A large roof lantern is proposed to light the space from above and large glass doors will open onto a landscaped garden.
Build Cost: Estimated at £100k.
Status: Outline design stage.
